Decent Nostalgia, But a Shadow of Its Former Self
I used to come to Sunrise Mall all the time as a kid—it was always packed, full of energy, and had a great selection of stores. Stopping by yesterday for the first time in 25 years, it was a completely different experience. Most of the shops are closed, the halls are nearly empty, and many remaining stores are running going-out-of-business sales. It’s a little sad to see how much it has declined. That said, it still holds some nostalgia, and there are a few places still open if you're looking for a quiet shopping experience.

I came here probably in the 1900s, and it was a very lively and lively place at the time. There was an REI at the Bird Cage directly opposite, so I used to go shopping there. If I remember correctly, there used to be an Eddie Bauer at Sunrise Mall, and I bought a very warm down-filled leather jacket there that I still wear today.
Time flies. It's amazing how quickly the mall changes. Although it is deserted now, various events are sometimes held in the parking lot. Parts of the mall have a nostalgic feel to them.
The ownership of this mall has changed hands many times, and there have been many discussions with local residents about what to do with the mall in the future. As it is located in a prime location, I sincerely hope that it will be put to good use.

Sunrise Mall is still open, so please come to Sunrise Mall.

Well here is another shopping mall that is on the verge of biting the dust. Literally every other store in here is CLOSED. This is a nice small little shopping mall that probably used to be bustling at one point, but that's not the case today.

It's not just this mall, but malls all across the country. Even cities like San Francisco have been loosing a lot of business. This is due to failed government policies that helped create this economic mess. People are stretched thin and also with online shopping, foreign competition like TEMU flooding our markets, it can be hard for local businesses to survive. Let my photos do the talking.

I recently visited this shopping center and was blown away by the variety of stores available. From high-end fashion to affordable home goods, there's something for everyone. The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, providing top-notch service throughout my visit. I was also impressed by the quality of the products I purchased – everything I picked up felt premium without the hefty price tag. Overall, it’s a great place to shop for both quality items and a diverse selection, making it excellent value for money.

Sunrise Mall is in its sunset years. Very few storefronts are open at this time of the mall’s life, but it is a surreal place to wander and feel nostalgic. It is my understanding that there are plans approved to demolish and redevelop the 100 acres into a new town center in the coming years (Citrus Heights “Sunrise Mall Specific Plan”). Now is the best time to pay final respects to this mall that was an important place of many memories over the past few decades. A very vivid reminder of the passage of time to watch something as big as a mall come to the end of its journey.

This mall has downsized quite a bit since the last time I visited. About a third of the mall was vacant but there were enough stores to shop for something to buy.
The bad thing is the food court was empty on a Saturday afternoon. Most of them were permanently closed. Only a coffee shop remain. Otherwise, get a drink from the vending machines.
The good thing is the Easter Bunny line was very short. You can get a picture taken quicker than a busy mall.
Restrooms by the food court were clean and good.
A Bitcoin ATM is available for use if needed. Massage chairs are also available and $1 buys 3 minute of massage. Works good too.

Update July 2024:
Sunrise Mall looks empty except for about a dozen shoppers. It just feels good shopping here compared to other big and crowded malls. I had a good exercise just browsing around or to just sit and relax on the comfortable lounge. Macy's is still open and a few other stores.

2022 Review: This is a very good mall but shoppers have dwindled down to about 10 -20% of what it was before because many customers are cautious about shopping in a closed environment filled with people that may be carrying some virus, unlike 3 years ago. I think if the mall introduce musical shows, dances, and games specially those geared for kids.

Also the food section is at the end of the mall instead of in the middle where all shoppers will have convenient access.

Macys is at one end but divided into two sections.

The Sunrise Mall has seen better days, with many stores closed and visible wear on its infrastructure, such as cracked tile floors. However, some popular retailers like Hot Topic and Spencer's remain open, offering well-stocked and reasonably priced merchandise. The mall also features various locally owned stores, which contribute to its charm. A recent addition is a drama theater, adding a unique entertainment option to the space.

Long-term, the City of Citrus Heights has ambitious redevelopment plans for Sunrise Mall, aiming to transform it into a mixed-use hub with retail, residential, and community spaces. The “Sunrise Tomorrow” plan envisions a walkable district with outdoor event areas and integrated transit options. However, this transformation could take up to 20 years to complete as it depends on securing private developers to execute the city’s vision.
