The well is about 12 miles away from the Montezuma Castle; it’s worth a visit.

We came in mid-September 2024 after the weather finally cooled down a bit.

There was a small walk uphill, and the walk is not handicap friendly. For wheelchair, it would be very difficult/nearly impossible.

The walk was about 0.3 miles and it continued on around the natural area for about 1 mile in total. I enjoyed the view and would recommend coming for the historical site and the view.

It would be nice to have a small panic on the rocks; we didn’t bring any food but it would be great on a clear day.

Do note that this site has no bathroom but two potable stales. No running water. Consider using the restroom at the castle before coming to the well.

Wow. What a magical place. The cliff dwellings are unique & mysterious.
The walk down to the canal & creek is like entering a different world with the water, rocks, and giant old cottonwood trees.
We were the only people on the trail at the time so we could hear the insects & one lone bird singing.
Pure desert awesomeness ?

Montezuma's well is a must see stop. It is very beautiful it is a short hike to a gorgeous overlook into the sinkhole. This is a no fee area and two ways to enter a paved way marked by gps or a dirt road. Both ways are well maintained. This was another must stop and see with positive reviews from the family. Please remember to wear sunscreen, protective clothes , and bring water during the summer months. This is a highly recommended stop. The scenery is awe inspiring.

If you drop by to see Montezuma’s Castle you should also check out the well. It is an about 5-6 miles off the freeway a few miles up the 17 from the castle but it is worth the little bit of extra drive to check out the well. There is no entry fee to get into the park to see the well which is really cool. The hike is pretty easy to see the well and the cliff dwellings around it. You can also hike around the loop to a cool little waterfall at the exit of the well.

It's not too bad of a walk. I'd say to do the complete circle it took about 20-25 minutes. I'm not sure if they get packed, but it was only us and another family while we were there. There are some stairs to go up and down, so it may be a little difficult for those who have issues walking.

If you have kids, ask the park ranger how they can get the little ranger badge before you start.

This is an awesome, little known or traveled to ancient historic site that is only about 10 minutes from I-17. Worth every minute and it's FREE!

Interesting to see the origins of the water for the area. A real concern was what appeared to be African rush taking over the open water space. Trails and signs. You must be in fair to good walking health to go up the hill and down to the water level. Please leave everything untouched as it is an archaeological site. Amazing birds all around. Very helpful park staff. Great lookout across the valley.
