Perfect place to see sunrise at the Grand Canyon! It’s amazing to see the canyon light up slowly as the sun rises. If you are coming from outside Arizona remember that Arizona doesn’t follow daylight saving time, so keep that in mind and don’t miss the sunrise time. We were here on July 1st and sunrise was at 5.15am Arizona time.

If you only see one thing in the Grand Canyon, then Mather Point is it!
This point provides a very awesome view of the canyon.
There is a visitor center and gift shop nearby and you can wander along the rim trail.
This is definitely the most popular spot on the south rim, so I can get crowded. But just walk along the rim trail and you will be able to get a great picture without the crowds.

The experience I had here was AWESOME! I visited twice, once at sunset and once in the morning. (yeah, I missed the sunrise) Personally, I loved the view at sunset better. If you are to visit the Grand Canyon, I recommend Mather Point as the best viewpoint. The weather was freezing cold since I visited in January, but it was totally worth it.

Even if you have few minutes to visit Grand Canyon, visit Mather Point, it is simply stunning. With so many different rock formations and colors, it will leave you speechless. It can get very crowded as it is a short walk down from the visitor center, so visit on the weekday if you can and stay till maybe 20 minutes or so after the sunset. Sunset views are second to none, nothing compares to Grand Canyon!

There is also bike rentals, an ice cream shop, visitor center etc. Whole area is very well maintained and worth visiting.

The main viewpoint near the visitor center makes it pretty crowded. I went for sunrise and there were a good number of people there. It's an excellent view and easily accessible so I'm giving it 5 stars, but here are better views with fewer people the farther west you go on the South Rim Trail. If you have the time I highly recommend walking at least part of the rim trail if you want some isolation (catch the red bus at the west end of the village then walk between a shuttle stop or two). My favorite parts of the rim are the areas between the viewpoints.

The attached photo is a shot of Mather Point from the next ridge over, to show the sunrise crowd on a Saturday.
