Creative Vendors Beware - Nadeen (owner of Gift & Thrift) reached out to me multiple times when she opened Gift & Thrift in Mesa and requested that I supply a rack with printed self-published magazines. I agreed and dropped off a rack with zines in it in November 2021. I signed a contract and provided my contact information. I received one payment and one sales report in January 2022. I did not receive any sales report in months after that, so I reached out and requested to pick up my items. I emailed Nadeen multiple times to retrieve my consigned items and did not hear back. She eventually did reply stating that she wanted to buy the rack and zines from me and that she did not have any of my payment information, despite me providing it and her using it to provide payment once before. I politely said no thank you and that I would like to pick up my items. Again, I did not hear back so I commented on an Instagram post of hers. Then I received a large payment through a link on my website even though I had specifically said I did not wish to receive payment for my items and that I wanted to receive them. I called her and, on the phone, I received many excuses as to why I couldn’t pick up my items. She complained a lot about her family life, and I let her know I’m sympathetic, but I do need my items back. She said her business was closed, she said all my items had sold, she said she brought the zines home for her kids. She raised her voice at me, would not let me speak, and called me names. She told me that she’s never had an issue with a vendor before.

Eventually, she ended up telling me that my rack with my paper zines were left in the rain and were damaged and completely ruined. I was never notified that my consigned items were damaged. She then told me that she intended to keep the zines and that she would deliver the rack back to me, but I have yet to receive it. She since has blocked me on social media to prevent me from reaching out to her further.

I’ve distributed my work in numerous places across the Phoenix Valley and I don’t usually experience this lack of responsibility and deceit. Vendors, if you want to have say over your items and want honest and clear communication, I suggest selling your items elsewhere. I don’t usually leave negative reviews, but I’ve done all that I can to reconcile my damaged property, and this has not been a pleasant experience.

Overall, I want to warn young artist vendors that this sort of treatment isn’t normal and shouldn’t be accepted in our community.
