Excellent! Very personal with valuable historic stories. Denise the Captain, was an expert on this area of Alaska. We saw Several whales, 2 bears, 3 sea lions, and 2 Bay Porpises. We'll worth the trip. Highlite of our cruise. Highly recommend Hoonah Travel Adventures. A little hard at first to find the pickup point, but if you trust the directions, you'll be fine.

My parents, best friend, and I had an amazing time during our Whale Watching tour. Our captain steered us so that we could see whales the entire time. We were even able to see a few bears. The captain and Patrick would also warn us when and where we could expect to see whale breaching the water. I also appreciated how the captain showed us pictures from his fishing trips in Hoonah and how life is lived in such a small town. I will gladly recommend Hoonah Travel Adventures to all family and friends who will visit in the future.

Boat was comfortable with indoor and outdoor seating. There was a tiered viewing area in back also. Captain Paul was amazing giving stories and his first hand knowledge of the area and wildlife. Saw lots of whales and other wildlife. Highly recommend for enjoyable informative tour of the area. The only negative was a low tide the ramp to the boat is VERY steep and not good for people with mobility aids. The Capt said they are working on a new ramp you may want to verify with them if it’s accessible.

We had a good experience. I was expecting a great experience based on reviews, and so unfortunately, we left feeling disappointed and a little confused. In fact, as we were leaving the dock, I wondered if we had joined the correct excursion! (We had.) The main issue was that I thought we would be actively looking for whales most of the time. It took a long time for us to start compared to the other tour boat, which left quickly. I could tell my husband was annoyed within 15 minutes of the tour. Our captain seemed more concerned about weaving in cultural stories than finding whales. I appreciate history and different cultures, but I was under the impression this was primarily a whale watching excursion. She would turn around to talk to us for extended periods and then if someone spotted a whale spout, it was "interrupting" her. We had a wonderful sighting towards the beginning where we saw a breach and a repeated tail flapping. Just incredible! Our guide said that should count as the guaranteed sighting, haha, and then didn't seem to be concerned about seeing many more whales. She took us out to see otters and sea lions, and we saw a bear from afar on the coast... also great sightings (although she almost ran over an otter because she was turned around talking to us). I chuckled at one point because she mentioned that 3 hours is a long time. I wanted to explain that when you are from a land-locked state, 3 hours to watch for whales is a short time! 😊 Personally, I wanted to see as much whale activity as we could. That's just not something you can see in a zoo. One more note, maybe I don't understand the dynamics, but we felt like she was a little hard on her young assistant. I don't usually leave long reviews, but wanted to explain my rating. I think your experience will depend on the guide you are assigned. Hopefully this guide will become more whale-focused.
