I have driven by this hotel several times before and have always been intrigued. We booked this as a waypoint to Red River due to a late start from our hometown. It was a great experience, and the hotel was well preserved for its age. The lobby, restaurant, and bar definitely made you feel like you were in the late 1800s. The rooms were quaint and spacious. The weather was cold so the rooms got a little drafty but that should be expected. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely stay there again.

A freak storm had us snowed in here for two days

Jeanette, her husband, and the staff made it so much fun.

They normally do not serve lunch, but Jeanette made tomato soup and grilled cheese for the guests since we couldn't get out. I never liked tomato soup, but hers was so delicious!!!

The building is from 1892. It is absolutely stunning! The details are amazing. They have done such a wonderful job!

If you go, you won't be disappointed.

My wife and I stayed here Friday November 15th. We were very late getting into Clayton, but the lovely owner, Jeannette, stayed up to welcome us. We had a fantastic room on the 3rd floor that was larger than any chain motel. The accommodations were wonderful, the bed extremely comfortable, and the history of the place made it a one of a kind. We will be back!

A charming piece of history with room for improvement

Hotel Elklund is a beautifully restored gem from the late 1800s, rich in art, history, and vintage charm. Walking through its halls feels like stepping back in time, with gorgeous period details and an atmosphere that history buffs will adore.

However, there are some practical aspects that could use attention. The lack of in-room coffee is a noticeable inconvenience, and the toilet paper quality feels more budget than boutique. The single-pane windows, while authentic, allow temperature fluctuations depending on the weather and let in quite a bit of noise—including the frequent train horns, which can be disruptive both day and night.

The staff, however, were incredibly friendly and attentive, going out of their way to ensure a pleasant stay. On the downside, housekeeping could pay a bit more attention to detail, as corners and less visible areas weren’t as clean as they should be.

Overall, if you're looking for a place with historical character and don't mind a few quirks, Hotel Elklund is worth a visit. Just be prepared for a few modern-day trade-offs.
