Simply put, the Highland General Store is my favorite store in the world. Somehow they always have exactly what you need. I can wonder around the warehouse stores for what seems like hours and not find what I need. In the Highland General store they always have it, whether it’s hardware, bulbs, paint, alcohol, select groceries, deli, even Italian ice in the summer. This store is an icon, comparable in my opinion to the Hasegawa General Store in Maui (better known as the Hana General Store). I have been going to Highland General Store for over 40 years and I want to express my appreciation to the family that has owned and run it over multiple generations. It is a truly great place, everyone who lives in that area of northern NJ is privileged to be able to shop there.

I was hiking in the area after that I was super hungry and tired. I came in and got a bag of chips and a soda before hitting the road. They have a hardware section and a deli. The selection of snacks and candies was very good. This store also has a large selection of wines and liquors. The cashier was very friendly as well. There was nothing special but this place is very convenient.

This is a great store. They often have everything you need. You do pay a premium for convenience, and the selection is not the best. Sometimes you're better off going down the mountain, but if you need quick and convenient *anything*, you can go there.

The next closest hardware store (in the valley) is not likely to have more, and they're a much better option than trying to get to Home Depot or McAfee.

The beer selection is pretty good. The liquor selection is decent. The tools and home repair equipment is good. Groceries are limited, but they'll often suffice.

Love this store. You can get drinks, hardware and the last minute pick up items you need. Always think of the general first.

While they don't have as much variety as you would find if you left "the mountain", it does usually have everything you need if your tastes are BASIC. This general store has a variety of beer, wine and hard liquor. They have a small food store, which carries soda and mixers. Given it is a general store, they also have hardware, paint and such too. ONE STOP SHOPPING...just not a wide selection of brands - but they usually have what you need. People are usually very nice and helpful.

I went to buy concrete and mortar. They are supremely over priced. Their margin on the concrete is around 78%.

Fine. It's a convenience factor. It would probably cost me too much in gas to warrant the trip to the closest Big Box home center.

My total purchase came to $22 and change. I had a 20 dollar bill. I asked if I could put the remainder on my debit card and the cashier told me as long as the card transaction was over $10.

That is very dumb on a few levels. First of all it makes me unhappy as a customer. Secondly, they are going to make more profit if they charge just the $2.

I understand that they are charged a fee for card transactions, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that 2% of $2 is lest then 2% of $10.

So the result is a negative 3 fold. They made me mad and I will likely look for any reason not to go there. They could have made more money on the transaction than if I charged $10 of the transaction on my card. Now they made NO money.

There is a hardware store just down the road in Vernon I will go to next time. ZERO stars and one finger up.

We love this store. They have everything you need for... hardware, paint, food, beer, wine, liquor, deli, snacks, home needs, plumbing, garden, fireplace, drinks, ice cream, coffee, lottery, etc. I'll take any excuse to visit.

Soup is great . So is the apple cake. Deli prices are lower than the supermarket in town. Sandwiches are great. Loved this place. Too bad I don't live in the area
